You Gotta Be Crazy!

Yep! This has to go into my “You Gotta Be Crazy” category. I was minding my own business (for once) writing articles and being me when some editor (who is actually a writer with a title, like me) has the nerve to send me an e-mail accusing me of lying in my tag-line. A tag-line is the blurb at the bottom of articles that tells a little bit about the writer. In the e-mail she wrote that she does not remember my byline in the publication in question. Would I please send a copy of the articles I wrote and my contact at the publication? OK. Since I am a God-fearing woman, I was polite and professional. I sent the information.
picture
All the while I’m thinking that she saw my picture
near the article and she thought that I am some young, naive chick who could not have written for her esteemed publication…
I just can’t get over her nerve. I wrote for this publication several years ago as a freelancer. I wrote my articles and sent them in. I never met my assigning editor in person. I wouldn’t recognize him if I saw him on the street. This is a fairly large publication that probably had dozens of freelancers. I don’t even know how many people wrote for this pub, but I do know that it was more than one person. Who knows how many people contributed content over the years?

People need to realize that we are in a digital world. Hello! There may be an entire crew of telecommuters or freelancers working for your publication. Sometimes companies hire off-site people to help with the workload. Get a clue, please.

The hirer may not advertise that there are freelancers or telecommuters working out there. They may not want you on-site folk to beg to work at home, too. LOL. We may be invisible to you, but we exist. We are hard workers, and we are people who deserve to be treated with respect.

It was extremely rude for this editor to state that if mentioning their publication in my credits was an error, I should remove it immediately. How about this: If sending me an accusatory e-mail was an error YOU should apologize immediately, lady. Of course, after I sent the info the prove that I had written for the said publication, this person didn’t sent me a dang thing back.

Now OK. I know that there are crazy, unethical, folk out there who lie about where they work, where they were published, and all that jazz. But it would have been smarter and 100% more tactful to send an e-mail stating that she noticed my tag-line and would like to introduce yourself as editor of the publication. She could have then asked me when did I write for the publication. She could have also asked me for a copy of the articles. That would have been fine. In fact, I would have been flattered that she was asking and would have sent the information. She could have gotten the requested documentation without accusing me of fraud. Of course, she could have conducted any in-house research on me from the documentation that I provided.

The funny thing is that when I wrote for this publication, it wasn’t all that popular. Now, the publication’s name is more recognizable. And it seems to me that this woman has gone and “got the big head.” Translation: she thinks she’s all that. Second translation: the e-mail was a tad bit too arrogant and presumptuous for my liking.

Now, my moral for this story is to save copies of all of your articles. Thank God that I was able to find a copy of at least one article that I wrote for these people. Save contact names and e-mail messages from people you work for. Take a deep breath, exhale, and forgive all of the haters.

Peace

.

Plan for a Work at Home Job

I would like to remind everyone that you need to plan and develop the skills necessary to work from home. You wouldn’t apply for a job as a vet if you didn’t  know anything about pets would you? You wouldn’t apply for a beautician job without knowing how to cut hair, right? Same thing with work at home jobs. You may need to know how to type at a certain word per minute. You may need to have skills or experience in content writing (or be able to quickly learn the skills).  Some companies are willing to give you a chance, but you must have something to work with! Research the skills needed to get the job you want. If you don’t have the required skills, go to school for additional training (if you can afford it) or buy books and practice at home. Essential People Skills

…status is man-made.it is worldly and in the larger schemeit is unimportant…

Iam shocked at how many people have limited soft skills or people skills. Some people simply do not know how to communicate effectively and tactfully. Other people, I think, have reached a certain level career-wise, and they think that it is OK to talk to others in any tone they choose. Everyone needs essential people skills. We must be very careful because the fall from the top is longer than the fall from the bottom! Frankly, it’s easy to think that you are bigger or more important than you are. Who are you? Status is man-made. It is worldly, and in the larger scheme of things, it is unimportant.

Be good to each other. When you make an error, apologize. Never assume that you know someone , and never assume that you know everyone. It’s a big world out there, and we are all complex individuals. Treat others as you would like to be treated, and be mindful of offending others. Mistakes may cost you your home business and your reputation. I don’t burn bridges, but sometimes I may singe them.

Area Leaders Needed!

Below is a message from Kendra Dixon from CCI.

I am an area coordinator for CCI, an International Student Exchange Organization who brings approximately 1200 high school students (ages 15 – 18 years of age), into the United States each year. Students who apply to our program have the desire to study our culture and become more fluent in the English language for an academic school year.

Opportunities as an Area Representative with CCI are now available throughout Northern California and can provide a rewarding experience for those who are interested in working part-time.

Responsibilities and Compensation:
CCI Area Reps are individuals with a love for international exchange who work flexible, part-time hours from home as individual contractors.
Responsibilities include:
• Identifying schools open to international exchange students
• Recruiting American host families and participants for CCI Discovery Abroad programs
• Matching host families with international students
• Providing orientations and group activities for international students and their host families
• Acting as a counselor/advocate for students and families

Area Representatives receive a stipend / commission for the placement and supervision of each student. We also provide travel incentives, based on your number of placements. (Our Conference in 2006, will be in Barcelona, Spain).

If you are a highly motivated individual and are interested in working part-time from your home, please email me for more details.

Thank You!

I Will Market… I Will Market

I know someone who is getting into selling Arbonne beauty products. Selling beauty products is not my thing, but it’s interesting to see just how she does it. She tells everybody about the product. She even told a man about it during lunch. She’s on her cell phone, talking about the products. She wears the products herself and shows me how they are helping her skin. I think that she’s only started with Arbonne about three weeks ago and she has three people interested in attending a seminar about it! I think that’s pretty good. She is persistent, too. I told her that I’m not interested in the product and she continues to tell me about — not in a pushy sort of way. She just keeps telling me how this cream is helping her skin. She has even taken before and after pictures!

I can also hear that when she tells people about her business she sells the top benefits. For example, the person who brought her into the company has a white Mercedes, that’s paid for by Arbonne. So, this woman always mentions to perspective recruits the white Mercedes and how she wants one. She also makes it sound like it’s easy to get the white Mercedes. Honestly, I don’t know if it’s easy or not to earn a white Mercedes through this company. I do know that people who you recruit into a business don’t want to feel as though it would take them 20 years to earn a profit or get a reward. Financial goals should be attainable. If you are in a sales business, you need to sell the attainable goals related to your business. I’m still not interested, but if I were somewhat interested, I’d go for it!

She also finds out what the person likes and tells the person about products that fit their tastes. She knows that I like natural stuff and herbs, so of course she tried to sell me on the fact that the products have herbs in them.

My lesson for today is that if you want to be in business, you have got to network and market your goods. I hate selling, but sales makes the world go around. Networking is a numbers game, I think. If you talk to enough people, you will get a bite. If you are persistent and have a knack for selling, that’s all the better.
