Affiliate ads and Adsense ads, from Google can turn your website into a money maker. You will have to set up an account with Google’s Adsense program or any affiliate program you choose. The programs help advertisers get people to see their ads, while you get compensated for allowing your space to be used.
There are several different theories on the best place to put your ads on pages. Some blog experts feel that the ads should be placed on the left side of the page, because readers naturally seek out the left page for navigation. Other experts think that the ads should be placed close to the text and within the text if possible. It’s a good idea to place the ads according your page layout. Where are your readers likely to look first? What draws their attention? You can also experiment, placing the ads in different locations and tracking reader response. Are readers responding to a particular size ad in a particular place? Google has published a pictorial with ad “hot spots.” This document is available to Adsense subscribers. Generally, the top of the page and the left side of the page are pristine spots for ads. Although, some bloggers swear that the right navigation area and embedded link ads are the best areas for ad placement.
Keep in mind that you are not going to become a millionaire overnight in this work at home business endeavor. Your readership has to build up over time and through your marketing efforts. This is not a passive work at home endeavor; you will have to put in hours marketing your blog and writing articles. One of my heroes, Problogger, Darren Rowse says that entrepreneur bloggers should write and post articles every day. Readers expect fresh, usable content every day. Although free content is out there, keep in mind that this content is widely circulated. Do you want your readers to read the same text on your blog as everyone else’s?
I think that most blogs fail because the publishers are not in it for the long haul. They expect instant success and are disappointed when they are ranked low in the search engines. Some sites have obvious layout problems, their pages are too difficult to read, their ads are misplaced, or they don’t have enough ads. Bloggers also tend to lose enthusiasm and stop updating their blogs. I make it a goal to write something every day. It’s probably even better to schedule a time for your blogging. Think of blogging as a slow and steady endeavor. It’s an investment. It’s not a get rich quick scheme. There are techniques that you could use to market your blog that could help increase your readership. Be realistic. It could take years before you make a profit, so keep your day job or work in other work at home jobs until you reach your financial goals. As I always say, “Hang in there!”
