The angels are singing right now, at least they are for me, because Matador, a travel writing site, is launching a print magazine. They are looking for writers. It’s always good news for writers when a new print magazine is launching, especially a print magazine with a solid online reputation. I love reading Matador online, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the new glossy. If I get to see my name in a Matador publication, well, that would be pretty nice too.
Better Freelance Writing Pay
I’m especially happy because Matador is paying its writers .50 cents per word. I think that many writers who only write online will find that to be shocking. That sounds like a fortune! However, many of you may not know this, but back in the day, writers were paid $1 per word. Some publications still pay $1 per word, but I suspect that they are few and far between, and you have to be a rock star writer (or at least have awesome connections) to get these gigs. I am not saying that these gigs are impossible to get, but you probably won’t get a $1 per word gig on your first query unless you’ve found a mummy or a dinosaur on your last picnic. I think that the competition for writing Matador will be fierce, too.
Getting the Matador Freelance Writing Gig
I read about the Matador opportunity on Erika Dreifus’ site. Thanks, Erika. I then went to the Matador article and learned that they have a Twitter site, for the new magazine, called Beta. Matador will be posting updates regarding writing opportunities on Twitter. Add @betamagazine to your Twitter list.
