Content Writer Jobs

There is a lot of debate on the Internet regarding writing for low-paying sites and content mills. Content mills are sites in which writers receive article topics, or they can choose the topics fro the sites. Writers are usually encourage to write a lot of articles because the articles are sometimes distributed to other blogs and sites.  Some mills have a minimum of articles that they feel that you should submit every day or every week. There are some writers who say that you should never write for content mills, because the pay is too low. The mills usually pay a couple of dollars for a 500-word article. They say that content mills devalue your skills, and many people liken them to slave labor. However, I would say that writing for content mills can help you pay the bills if you are struggling financially, and if you are a fast, accurate writer, you can make decent money from some content mills. If you have a full-time job, you can write a few articles from content mills in your spare time for extra money.

If you are a full-time writer, you can keep a few content mill sites in your client list so you will have work to fall back on when your regular, higher paying clients have no work. Some content mills provide articles with residual pay, so once you write the article, you can receive royalties. That’s a good deal if you have articles that articles that rank high in Google search engines. A lot of writers contribute to content mills because they often pay once or twice a week, rather than on publication like the print magazines. Some content mills are better than others. Seek out content mills that offer pay raises for exceptional work. Seek out content mills that offer residual pay and upfront pay. Beware that content mills come and go, so find stable content mills that pay $10 or more per 500 words.  You can write for the lower-paying mills when you need extra money quick, you are a beginner, or if you really need the cash and have no other work. There are higher paying mills, like Demand Studios and About.com (some people consider this site a content mill). Landing a job with the higher paying, more reputable mills, can be challenging.  However, as you write for most of the mills, always look for higher paying jobs.

Examples of content mills:

About.com

Demand Studios

Suite 101

Text Broker

Blue Glass

Matador is Looking for Writers

Posted on : 01-11-2010 | By : Claudine | In : Make Money at Home

The angels are singing right now, at least they are for me, because Matador, a travel writing site, is launching a print magazine. They are looking for writers. It’s always good news for writers when a new print magazine is launching, especially a print magazine with a solid online reputation. I love reading Matador online, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the new glossy. If I get to see my name in a Matador publication, well, that would be pretty nice too.

Better Freelance Writing Pay

I’m especially happy because Matador is paying its writers .50 cents per word. I think that many writers who only write online will find that to be shocking. That sounds like a fortune! However, many of you may not know this, but back in the day, writers were paid $1 per word. Some publications still pay $1 per word, but I suspect that they are few and far between, and you have to be a rock star writer (or at least have awesome connections) to get these gigs. I am not saying that these gigs are impossible to get, but you probably won’t get a $1 per word gig on your first query unless you’ve found a mummy or a dinosaur on your last picnic. I think that the competition for writing Matador will be fierce, too.

Getting the Matador Freelance Writing Gig

I read about the Matador opportunity on Erika Dreifus’ site. Thanks, Erika. I then went to the Matador article and learned that they have a Twitter site, for the new magazine, called Beta. Matador will be posting updates regarding writing opportunities on Twitter. Add @betamagazine to your Twitter list.

Should You Send Samples?

Posted on : 01-11-2010 | By : Claudine | In : Earn Money Writing, Make Money at Home

Some writers feel that you should never send original samples to clients for fear of them freely using your hard-earned work on their blogs. Some scammers ask writers to submit original samples for job try-outs and the writers never receive a response about the job or they are turned down and their work is still used.

There is a risk involved in submitting original samples for freelance writing jobs, but I have learned that it’s often worth the risk to send the sample. I’ve worked with several companies and individuals who have asked me to try-out an article. In a couple of occasions, I realized through the process of writing the sample, that the work involved wasn’t worth the money. In most cases, I completed the sample without a hitch, and I got the freelance writing job.

You are taking a greater risk when you submit original samples to clients who advertise on gig sites, like Craig’s List. However, I wouldn’t discount sending a short original sample to these potential clients. I usually don’t answer ads that say that the position is perfect for students or interns. That translates into low pay or no pay. I also like to apply to ads that list a rate. I find that many companies give job applicants a long lists of requirements, but they fail to detail how much the writer will be paid. That’s a red flag, in my opinion.

I usually avoid sending original samples to start-up companies unless I’ve read about the company on a message board and have read positive reviews from others. I want to know that others have gotten paid from the company if they were hired.

People who want to write for a living should understand, that you may end up spending a considerable amount of time applying to work for companies. You’ll have to fill out online forms, send e-mails with resume attachments and cover letters. In some cases, you may have take a writing test. You can spend all day, simply applying for positions. Because clients are inundated with applications, it could take weeks before they contact you, if they contact you at all.

Writing is a lot of work, and some clients want to see what you can do with their particular project before they consider hire you. There are some individuals who refuse to write original content to get a job, choosing instead to apply only for positions in which they they use previously published materials. You are eliminating yourself from some great opportunities if you go that route.

When I worked as a guide for About.com, I spent several weeks in a training program writing content for free and learning how to use the site tools. If I had refused to take that chance, I would not have been hired to write for About.com.

Tutoring Online

0

Posted on : 11-10-2010 | By : Claudine | In : Make Money at Home, Online Tutoring

If you are a certified teacher or have an ESL certification, you should consider tutoring online. There are several companies out there that hire tutors in most areas. You may know about Tutor.com, which hires tutors for math, English, and science courses for K-12 students. Teaching students who are non-native speakers is also a real possibility. Companies that are outside of the United States hire native speakers, but remember, you must have experience and usually an ESL certificate.

I just returned from teaching English in South Korea, and I have to say that getting an online tutoring job was probably more challenging that getting an on-site job in South Korea (and the school system in South Korea reimburses for airfare and pays for a tiny study apartment). The most difficult part about teaching in South Korea was getting the paperwork completed to get a visa.

To tutor online, I’ve had to have interviews (I had a phone interview to teach in South Korea) and I had to have simulated lessons online for real students or trainers from the companies. You may think that one or two sample lesson will complete the process after the interview – not true. I’ve had to give several sample lessons and participate in hours of online training , sometimes watching videos and answering questions, sometimes completing live training sessions with trainers.

Because many of the ESL companies work at night while we are settling down to go to sleep in the U.S., I’ve had interviews and training sessions that have lasted until the wee hours of the morning. Tutoring companies also want serious teachers, so having customer service experience in lieu of real teaching experience isn’t going to cut it. I’ve found that many of the companies also have internet speed requirements (they can run a test to check).

Online tutoring companies get many applicants, or so they say in their advertisements. However, tutoring can be a fun part-time position. To work full-time,you probably have to work for several companies.
